Where The Wild Things Are ~ Maurice Sendak (1963, Harper & Row)

Summary: This book is about a boy named Max. Max made some bad decisions and is sent to bed without dinner. While in his room, Max's imagination takes him to a land where the wild things live. The wild things decide to make Max their King. Max seems to be having fun with the wild things until he wants to be with the someone who loved him best of all, his mother. He gave up being the King of the wild things and went home. Once he arrived home, he found his supper waiting for him.

My Review: This book is another one of my favorites to read to my son. It sparks the imagination in children which is often hard to find in these technological days. I also love the illustrations! The wild things are great imaginary characters that kids will love.
Author: Maurice Sendak grew up in Brooklyn and worked as an illustrator for comics and other authors. Sendak has written and illustrated two other popular children's books, In the Night Kitchen (1971) and Outside Over There (1982). Sendak has received several awards for his many works and was the first to receive the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for literature (2003). He was considered the first artist to discuss children's emotions openly. In doing so, he has influenced several generations of writers.
Genre: Fiction
Theme / Skill: Children learning to not get their way all the time.
Age Level: 7-10
Pre-Reading Activity: Do a picture walk with the children who will be listening to the book. Ask them what they think about the pictures that they see. What do they predict will happen in the story?
Post-Reading Activity: Have children find their favorite page and list 3 artistic details that make that page interesting to them. Find the pages without text and have students describe what is going on in the picture.
